Susan Hodgkins

Arlington teacher

Susan Hodgkins, who taught in the Arlington County Public School System for 31 years, mostly at Ashlawn Elementary School, died Aug. 15 at Capital Caring hospice in Arlington. She was 63.

She had cancer, said a daughter, Shelby Hodgkins.

Mrs. Hodgkins was a special-education teacher at Arlington County’s Abington Elementary School from 1976 to 1979. She then was a special-education teacher until 1995 at Ashlawn Elementary, where she continued until 2007 as a fifth-grade teacher.

After a teaching stint at Pinecrest School, a private school in Annandale, Mrs. Hodgkins worked for schools in the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. She was a middle school science and math teacher at St. Thomas More Cathedral School in Arlington from 2008 to 2010 and then had taught fifth grade until her death at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Alexandria.

Susan Helene Grimes was a native of Bristol, Pa., and a 1972 graduate of Juniata College in Huntington, Pa. She received a master’s degree in specific learning disabilities from George Washington University in 1976.

She lived in Alexandria, where she was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Jay Hodgkins, and two daughters, Shelby Hodgkins and Sarah Hodgkins, all of Alexandria.
