Stringfellow Barr Dies - The Washington Post
Stringfellow Barr, 85, an author and educator who founded a Great Books program while president of St. John's College in Annapolis, died of pneumonia Feb. 3 at the Goodwin House nursing home in Alexandria. He had lived at the home since 1978.
Mr. Barr was president of St. John's from 1937 to 1946. In collaboration with Scott Buchanan, who was dean of the college, he established the Great Books program, a mandatory study plan modeled on courses taught at Columbia University and the University of Chicago.
